Hello Everyone,
I plan to replace the original 500 GB HDD on my 2012 MacMini with an SSD.
Short history -
Existing internal drive on the Mini is the original one, so it's about 8 years old. No problems with it.
A few months ago I saw a very good deal on a 500 GB external SSD (Seagate) and decided to upgrade from ElCapitan and run the Mini using that external in the interim until I find a good price on a 1 TB SSD internal.
Works without any issues on the 500 GB external, just not very convenient when I move the Mini having that extra external box.
Right now there seem to be reasonable deals on two 1 TB internals I have hadon my radar to replace the 500 GB spinner in the Mini:
The Samsung 1 TB EVO, and the
Crucial MX300
These are both 3D NAND drives and from what I read technically pretty much equivalent - difference is that the Crucial is $40.- less than the Samsung at this point.
Two things I'm wondering about for this swap:
1. Is there a temperature sensor associated with the original 500 GB HDD that somehow has to be swithed to work with the replacement 1TB SSD
2. What about TRIM with the replacement SSD?
And would one of the two drives I'm considering be a better choice?
Plus anything else to consider?
Has anyone on the forum done that swap on a 2012 Mini and can comment on it - the physical swap seems very straight forward.
No code has to be inserted here.
