I have a Macbook Pro Retina 15" Mid 2014
Can I replace the SSD drive with a HDD drive?

Why would you want to go from a SSD (superior) to a HDD (inferior)?

The MBP has a SSD slot that can be upgraded, but it's an NVMe interface, not a SATA interface. HDD's traditionally use the SATA interface, so no you cannot do this replacement. If your SSD is failing, you can purchase a new one from OWC and replace it.

If you want to use an external drive you can.
