Recording applications help

i was wondering wether there was a free program that could be used to record audio straight from my laptop. im trying to make a mixtape but cant think of a way to get it down onto mp3.
garageband can record what comes out of my speakers but obviously not very high quality. any suggestions?

There is a program called WireTap that does what you've described but I'm not sure if it's free... Google WireTap and see what you can find =)

Do you mean to record from it to another source, or on to the hard drive?
If you want to record from one app, say itunes, to another, you can use Audio Hijack,the base version of which is free.
It allows you to hijack any application and record in a variety of formats including mp3.
