10.6.8 is the latest version of Snow Leopard for sure.

I think the proper terminology is "final" release of Snow Leopard, not "latest" release, since that implies there will be another when there won't be.

Thanks for the heads up on that security flaw, MacInWin. I wasn't aware of it.

Marrk if your computer can run mavericks OS X.9 it is a good idea to upgrade. After that update to version OS X.9.2 which contains the latest security protection. Back up to an external drive firstly and be aware after Snow Leopard older PowerPC applications, such as Office 2004, will not run and you may need to update to the Intel version.

Rumour has it support for Snow Leopard has no finished which means no more security updates. This is common with older operating systems, such as Windows Xp, Snow Leopard etc.

If you don't have enough available space on your drive to install Mavericks - feel pretty confident your computer is also running like molasses. It's past time to do some drive cleaning and free up some space and then a defrag.

Bob, I think I haven't figured this thing out correctly.

What should I look at under "System Preferences" or "About This Mac" that would tell me how much available space I have?

Don't use either one of those. Open Disk Utility - found in Applications - Utilities - highlight the Macintosh HD on the left, at the bottom you'll see the amount of free and used space on the drive.
