I recently purchased a MC508LL/A 21.5" Desktop PC 3.06GHz Core i3 1TB 4GB El Capitan. I also purchased a pair of Crucial 8gb ram modules to add in (2-8gb DDR3L-1333 SODIMM). When I had all 4 ram modules in I got a few errors and restarts (panic cpu 1 caller possible memory corruption). When I removed the factory ram and only used the Crucial ram I also got errors and restarts (same errors). Now the system just flashes the apple logo and immediately restarts. It works fine with the factory ram only. Any thoughts?

If the original ram works fine…and the new ram doesn't. The new ram is either faulty…or it's the wrong ram.

Specs looked exactly the same. Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3L 1333 MT/s (PC3-10600) CL9 204-Pin SODIMM Memory For Mac CT2K8G3S1339M / CT2C8G3S1339M https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008LTBJK2/?tag=macforums0e4-20

Like I said…ram could either be faulty or wrong type. If the correct ram was purchased…then that narrows things down…faulty ram.;)

Return & get replacement ram. Or return…and purchase ram from somewhere else…like OWC (macsales.com).:)

Thanks. I'm looking at their website now. Would faulty ram work "sometimes"? For instance, I'm currently using the iMac in question.

What you listed in post #4 is called a "Kernel Panic". Most times kernel panics are hardware related…and many times the faulty hardware is usually bad ram (on a computer that worked fine previously before new ram was installed).

Kernel panics are pretty much random. Sometimes you may get some extended stability…sometimes 10 minutes...sometimes 2 minutes…etc.

It's really easy logic.:)

- Computer works fine with old ram.
- Computer does not work fine with new ram.

Conclusion. There's a problem with the new ram.;)

- Nick

p.s. You probably purchased 2 sticks of new ram. Very possible that only one of them is bad. But also remotely possible both are bad.

Faulty ram can cause problems either intermittently or consistently. Several years ago I bought a new Mac from a reliable third-party vendor. It would sometimes run for days with no problems then suddenly have issues. Performance passed the Apple Hardware Test distributed with that machine. Finally, I downloaded a third-party utility to test the ram and failed immediately and consistently.

I think Nick is on the right track with memory issues being the problem.

Crucial is sending out 2 new sticks. I'll try them and if I am still getting the same issue I'll try a different brand.

Thanks both of you for your help!

I've used Crucial memory with good results. Never had to return the sticks I bought from them but the have a good reputation for standing by their products.

Memory modules are sometimes difficult to "seat" properly in an iMac. Make sure the modules are seated properly and not halfway or partway pushed down in the slots. I suggest removing them and reseating them carefully. You may have to use some force to get them seat all the way in the slots, but be careful not to break anything.

It's showing that I currently have 20GB ram (8x2, 2x2) in About this Mac, which is correct. I've read that the max is either 16 or 32 (conflicting reports).

Max is 16 GB for that machine according to Mactracker and OWC. Your kernel panics are probably being caused by the 2 x 8 GB modules which may not be compatible with your model iMac. I would send the 8 GB modules back to Crucial and exchange them for 2 x 4 GB modules.

Your iMac is being identified by the system as an 11,2 which says it's a 21.5" 2010 model iMac. That model can only hold 16 GB of memory and it's likely the 8 GB modules will not work in it causing your KPs.

Received 2 new sticks. installed and after about 20 minutes had a restart and got this:

It was stated earlier that the iMac's original ram works fine. This indicates that the computer is fine.

The problem is the new ram. The ram is either faulty or incompatible. Since the new ram has been tried twice…I'm going to say we're talking incompatible ram…since two sets of faulty ram would be pretty darn rare.

My advice is return the ram…get a refund…and purchase from another store (for example macsales.com).

By the way. Just looked up the specs on this computer. It has a max ram of 16 gig…and it has 4 ram slots. You should NOT be using 8gig sticks of ram. If you want 16gig of ram…as chscag mentioned earlier...you should be using 4gig sticks of ram (4 x 4gig).

The 8gig ram you have is probably fine…it just shouldn't be used in this computer.

Sound advice. I've been out of the computer world for about 10 years, and I've only been dealing with Mac's for a year.

So, 16gb is the max. 2x8gb is no good though? It has to be 4x4gb?

That would be my guess. If there are four slots and the maximum memory is 16 GB then the maximum size for each chip will be 4 GB. The 8 GB may fit physically but there is probably something else preventing them from working. One of my earlier Macs would take a chip configuration where the machine could physically take more memory than the internal circuitry could "see" and make use of.
