Hi,

I'd like to buy some more Ram for my Mac Pro but I'm confused with the pricing.

I bought this ram "Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) ECC Fully Buffered Dual Channel Kit Memory For Apple Mac Pro Model KTA-MP667AK2/4G" in Dec 08 from newegg for $110 and now the same stuff cost $181!!

Has Memory for macs really gone up like 60% in price?

Has anyone noticed this?

Any advice on were to buy Ram for Mac Pro?

Maybe cause DDR2 is old technology it's going to be phased out one day. And the retailers know this and are charging top dollar for the old ram thinking it's hard to get.

Could be down to exchange rates, a weak dollar will up the price of imports, but while that is bad news for your RAM - that is good news for US exporters

This.

So if you people want DDRII ram you better get it now, because two things are going to happen.

1) Hard to find
2) Prices going up because of that

Also..RAM prices are VERY volatile since the bulk of the core technology comes from 3 or 4 manufacturers..so a lack of supply means prices skyrocket and then settle down..

For example, NAND prices get ridiculously high when big device vendors like Apple are getting ready to release a new product like the iPad..once the demand subsides..the prices return to their normal levels..

I think the title "Ram Scam" is a bit unfair.

The price of ram has always been very volatile. Like "RazOrEdge" mentioned...there aren't that many ram manufacturers...and the smallest "hiccup" can cause prices to increase.

This can happen due to:

- labor issues
- supply shortages of just one component
- natural disasters such as a hurricane/typhoon, earthquakes, etc.
- a fire in a factory or a factory burning down completely

I remember a number of years ago...there was some sort of shortage of a resin or epoxy used in the manufacturing process of ram...and that sent prices sky-rocketing!

So just because the price of ram increases...doesn't mean there is any sort of "Ram Scam".

Nick is right. Ram prices are very similar to oil prices.... :(

Regards.
