On a Mac, when you download an external program/app (such as Skype, Firefox, Kindle, etc...) can you delete the "disc-like" icon that appears on the desktop after you have fully installed the program?

The disk like icon on the desktop actually gets "ejected" similar to ejecting a CD that you have been use to in times past.

You can do that by right clicking (or control click) on the icon and selecting Eject "name of disk" in the pop up menu or by dragging the icon to the trash.

After you have ejected the disk, you can then delete the original download.
Before you delete the download, I always quit the app if I've already opened it, go to the Applications folder and open it again just to make it's installed.
