Hi, i'm souping up an A1181 for funsies and don't like the fact that the only one I could afford was a 32-bit 2.0 Core Duo model, but I like the fact that putting one together is cheaper than buying the later 64-bit models. I found that the Late 2006 1.83 Ghz Core 2 Duo board has the same screw locations and the same ports and connectors. But I heard some require replacing cables and heatsinks. Is it a direct swap or are there other things I have to replace?

Macs aren't like PCs where you can cobble things together and somehow get it to run a new'ish version of the OS to run your latest and greatest apps..

A 2006 Mac is obsolete, i.e., it will not run any recent version of macOS and recent apps will have minimum requirements that surpass what you can run on that machine. You are playing with a very controlled ecosystem.

So you might want to limit how much money you spend on this adventure.

Welcome to our Forum and thank you for your post.

It may seem to you that your first post generates a sort of "negative" response; but that is not true.

As the song goes, your Mac is "16 going on 17" and unless you want to keep it as a memento of the times - and many do - then sadly you will have to acquire a much more recent Mac if you wish you get anywhere in terms of modern-day computing.

Not just the Operating System (OS), the apps that go with it are redundant, and worst of all, security, now a big issue, is way behind modern day standards.

My advice is: don't spend a penny on it; save up and get a new/refurbished/recent-second-hand Mac and go from there.

We can advise you about reputable sources for second hand Macs or any other info/advice you may need. :) ;)
