Image and sound from windows laptops work just fine through our village hall AV system (HDMI link to Benq Projector then to speakers via Yamaha amplifier). However, we are unable to get any sound from connected Macbook. The Macbook is connected to HDMI via a USB-C to HMDI adaptor and the sound output on the Macbook is set to 'Benq PJ, Type HDMI' in settings (see image). Irrespective of the volume controls on Macbook and amp no sound is heard.

Hopefully, someone here will be able to advise what I have missed.

Can you tell us what exact Mac this is, and provide a link to the exact cable you are using?

Are you using the same HDMI cable between the Mac and monitor and the Windows PC? If not, you might want to check that the HDMI cable is working properly on another computer and sending out audio.

Yes - same cable.

Finding out what actual Mac he has will be immensely useful. The listing for that cable has a long list of compatible devices, as well as a handful that are not compatible. Neither list is complete, but we gotta start somewhere.

I asked the owner of the laptop but his reply was incomplete. Hoping to gain access to it myself within the next week to obtain full info.

No one has mentioned this....early implementations of HDMI didn't include sound. You had to run a separate audio patch cable from your Mac to your monitor or projector for sound.

It's impossible to know if this is the problem since we don't know what model Mac is being used.

Update. Finally resolved!

Laptop that had the issues is an M1 2020 Macbook Air and the cable adapter was found NOT to be an issue as we discovered the necessity to change the speaker output setting in the Audio MIDI Setup Utility (shown below) in addition to the option in Settings as shown in original post.
