iMac 27" 3.5 i7, 24GB. Drobo5D EHD. Mac Book Air. 2010 15" Mac Book Pro. Retired 2008 (3.1) Mac Pro
From what I can find, there is no benefit to the hardware/software, off vs. sleep, just the convenience
of speed in getting back on the computer. Is that correct?

A Mac is still a computer so a reboot once in a while can help if you're having paging issues or other memory issues that OS X doesn't handle itself. This isn't something that happens a lot but restarting can help and doesn't take long.
