Years ago the iPods and the Touch were popular. But nowadays everyone even kids in grade school have either an iPhone or Android phone.

I miss the old original iPods with the click wheel. The problem with those was the small hard drive that was inside of them. They gave out and were expensive to replace. The ifixit site had instructions on how to replace those hard drives with a flash drive. I actually did that for an iPod that my wife dropped and killed the hard drive.

My gosh... I think my wife still has one of those somewhere in one of our drawers... and of course probably an iPod nano or two... and not with a single song purchased from Apple's iTunes...

Well, I am now totally confused by the idea of what to get as far as a USB hub is concerned? A load are talking of 'pass through charging'? It looks as if the hub is plugged in the mains and with all of the ones I have managed to find it's then plugged into a MacBook or similar? But I have yet to find one for what will be our new mid range iMac M1 24.

I am confused and concerned that this 'pass through charging' thing is going to try to put a charge current through to the iMac and I would think that it would sneeze quite loudly at that? So if someone could point me in the right direction for a hub for the new machine, I would be very grateful. Preferably one with more than a 6" long USB-C cable into the back of said iMac?

My main connections will be Ethernet, 3 or 4 USB-A type ports and an SD card slot for my camera cards.

AS400s were so much less complicated to fix/work on :-0

I assume that nobody has any ideas as to which would be the best hub for me to get?

To be honest, John, your post was a little confusing to me. Your new iMac has USBc ports on the back, right? The various models of the new iMac line have different sets of ports, but a hub that fits one should, I think, fit any of them. I would think something like this would be reasonably practical: USB-C Clamp Hub for 24-inch iMac

Note: I don't have this hub, or anything from Satechi, but it seems to have a good reputation from the various reviews I've found.

I like Satechi because of their outstanding customer support and their devices are well built. However, they are a California based company and may not ship outside the US.

But I'm sure John can do plenty of comparisons by going to Amazon, UK.

I am sorry if my post was confusing Jake, but as I was looking through the choice of hubs most seem to be designed for MacBook/laptops and I was concerned about the pass through charging facility on them?

Thank you for taking time out to show me this model. It looks very promising and for once it less ££ than $$ on Amazon Chas ! That doesn't happen very often mate!

Charlie, Satechi does ship internationally. Here is what they say on their website:
For shipping quotes (international, expedited, overnight, 2-day, etc), place the items you would like to purchase in your cart, go to your cart, then click "Proceed to Checkout". Enter your shipping zip code and the shipping rates will automatically generate based on the item's weight and the delivery location.

But it looks like John found it on Amazon, which is great! I really like the look of that hub. Almost makes we want to get an iMac.

John, glad you sorted it. Basically the "pass through" is designed to be able to use a hub on a MBP with a USBc port that is also the charging port and still power up the MBP. Doesn't apply to the iMac, of course, but it's not something I think you need to worry about. If the USB port doesn't negotiate the power, the hub won't provide it, as I understand the protocols.

Glad to hear that John found it on Amazon. Satechi as I mentioned above has outstanding customer support. I purchased a backlighted keyboard from them some time ago and although it worked great, it strobed the backlighted keys when the board went to sleep.

I notified Satechi about it and they immediately sent me a new keyboard with updated firmware. I did not have to send the old one back and they did not charge me for the new one. Their support responded to my email immediately and without any delay, sent me the new keyboard. :)

We have a approx date of the 10th Oct for the new iMac, but it may be earlier than that, hopefully

I'm sure you will enjoy that new M1 iMac John. It's a different Mac from what you've been used to.

You didn't mention which color you ordered?

Silver of course Chas. I don't think I could handle a pycodelique jobbie mate :-0

We also went for some built in redundancy with a 1 terrible byte SSD and stuff the expense ? Stuck with 8 gig of RAM though..

As long as you don't run out of British beer tokens, things are OK. At present I have 25 British beer tokens from my last visit. Planning to go back in November to exchange them for British beer.

This trip is for a week in London then a week in Dorset. We have a cottage reserved in Shaftesbury that will be our home base for day trips. Haven't decided what to do whilst there, we may just go day-by-day. We get there often enough that we don't feel the need to do the tourist thing. But it's close to Wiltshire so one never knows!

Oh, so a week in London and a week in England ;)

As a Londoner i am allowed to say that, but it's like any other big city and the last time I was anywhere there was about 30 years ago when I spent a year in the specialist canter at the IBM Hardware Service Center doing specialist stuff on AS400s and the like. The HSC was very interesting but I just can't stand big cities :poop:

We rather like London to visit. Wouldn't want to live there, though. Like you, big cities are not our cup of tea for permanent residence. But SWMBO has some definite plans for Christmas shopping. She's mentioned Fortnum & Mason, plus afternoon tea at either the Ritz or Savoy. I gave her afternoon tea at the Goring hotel for her birthday, so there's that. Plus a Saturday on Portobello road. We also plan to visit the Hyde Park Winter carnival event. London is very pretty decorated for the season. From Shaftesbury we want to go to visit some friends in Winchester and visit the Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market. We were there a few years ago and loved the time, so it's a repeat visit.

She had it on the bucket list to stay in Castle Combe, but the resort was fully booked, so that's off. We have three unplanned days between London and Shaftesbury that we need to sort out yet.

"She's mentioned Fortnum & Mason" ! Scary man!

Castle Coombe is a beautiful little village, but very popular with 'grockels' (tourists) so it's no surprise they were booked up.

Just to the right of the 'Butter Cross' in the lower photo is/was a nice pub. With all this covid 'stuff' flying around I don't know if is still open? It's only about 1/2 hour from us and I must see about getting down to one of the race meetings sometime soon?

We've driven there and walked around. She wants to stay in the Manor house in the second picture, but it's all booked up. Yeah, it is grockel-y, but she is SWMBO, after all!

Thanks guys, these forums are such a great place to learn new things and thanks to Wikipedia I now know what a British Beer token or a exonumia is exactly. ;) ;)

Enjoy them when you get to use them. ;)
