My MAC Big Sur does not recognize my old video camera any longer and I am going on a trip shortly and surely need to document some great landscapes and wildlife. What camera do I need to be able to input the raw footage into iMovie? Since I am not very versed on formats etc I just need basic novice kind of information so I can select the right video camera. I don't want to have to use my iPhone and a telescope but could. Thanks to all you comment.

I don't have a recommendation on cameras, but have you tried Image Capture? It's free and came with the Mac. Does the old camera have a USB cable connection that could connect to the Mac? Is it possible to change the video format the camera saves/exports? If you gave the model of the camera, maybe someone can get it back to communicating with the Mac.

As Jake said above, what camera and connection type are you using to connect to your Mac? Also, which model and year is the Mac you are using? I have an old Sony HandyCam from 2000-2001, which with the correct cables and a little patience, I can connect to my Mac mini via my Thunderbolt 2 port.

Most of those older video cameras had a firewire output. I remember shopping for one years ago at Best Buy and wound up not buying anything because I was running Windows at the time from a home made machine I built.

If it's firewire, the iMac in his signature should have a Firewire port. He mentioned Big Sur, so maybe he has a new machine?
