Microsoft Office 365 problems

Technical this is not a Mac problem but I have tried to get help from Microsoft and they are useless. Last week I upgraded from an ancient iMac (2008) to a new iMac. In the process I purchased and installed Office 365. When I open a spread sheet, make changes, and try to save I get a message that Office 2016 is no longer supported. When I got to File > save the Save is greyed out. I suspect taht even though Office 365 is installed the modern version of Excel is NOT installed and I am still working with an antique version of my spread sheet. Any thoughts on my dilemma?

Delete all versions of all Office products, then reboot and reinstall the O365 from scratch. That's what I would try.

Jake you are a genius. I spent an hour on the phone with a µsoft guru until he had to catch the train home? He was absolutely no,help. I tried your suggestion and IT WORKED. I just updated an important spreadsheet and saved it with no problem. Thank you so much.

Update. I did as stated in the previous post and I am certain it worked. I know for a fact that all the Office 365 apps were installed but when I tried again a few minutes later my saved spread sheet was gone and the save function was not working. A colossul mystery

Just to be sure, you are using O365, the subscription version? I ask because that version checks with the "mother ship" at M$ before allowing the apps to be fully used (i.e., to save a document). And that means you have to have, and configure, your M$ account for that purpose. You can verify that Excel knows your account by opening Excel, then click on "Excel" on the top menu bar and then "About Microsoft Excel" and look at the resulting window. It should show your license, who the copy "Belongs to:" and the "Device ID" that is generated by the installation process and uniquely identifies that Mac. All of that is used by M$ to reduce software piracy. When any app in O365 starts up, it connects to M$ servers, passing along the registration information and getting some sort of confirmation from M$ to "unlock" the blocked functions.

So, verify that your account is valid and showing on the "About" screen.

Jake - Did as you suggested and it shows version 16.83 (24031120) , License "Not activated" Belongs to me and a very long Device ID. Does the "Not activated" mean it is not live?

Yes, that is what I suspected. You have not activated the software, so it will not save a document. Ian's link shows how to do that.

Hi Jake

Looked into your suggestion and at first blush I think it worked. I made changes to a spread sheet and pressed File > Save and it worked. I also checked the license and it has my name as opposed to Not Activated. KEEPING MY FINGERS CROSSED. THANKS A MILLION
