Managing columns in Mail folders

I want to manage the widths of the columns in Mac mail folders. I can do that by moving the sliders at the top of each column but this change is only temporary. When I move to another folder and return to the folder I have changed, it has gone back to some previous default arrangement. How do I make these re-arranged column widths stick?
