Yesterday, I ran my fortnightly scan of Malwarebytes for Mac, and uninvited a new version, Version 3, was downloaded and advertised as a 'free download'..

Whilst the download is free, the software comes with a 30 day so called free trial period, and one then has to upgrade to the premium version at a cost of AUD$59.99, which I guess is about US$35.00 per year. This is pretty disappointing as Malwarebytes for Mac has been promoted very strongly on this forum. It would seem pointless downloading an earlier version, as the first time a scan, and automatically an update check, is run, up comes the version 3 'Free Download' option.

Disappointing to me one is not able to simply purchase the software but I guess this was always on the cards when the old adware software was sold to the current owners.

I guess this is what happens with success. They certainly could have been a bit more generous...and started pricing at something like $5 or $10 (considering it was free). Jumping all the way to $39.99 (US price)...could be a bit of a shocker.:(

We certainly could continue to recommend Malwarebytes (since it does have the 30 day free trial). This at least will allow folks experiencing some troubles to see if running Malwarebytes helps. Then they can decide to purchase or not.

p.s. If I'm reading things correctly...my version seems to be 1.2.4.584 (older version from 2016). My signature file version is 222 (2017-08-03). And I haven't seen anything that's forcing me to upgrade to version 3.

I just downloaded version 3 today, I'll see in 30 days if I get the "purchase" option. Not worth it to me, as I haven't had it for about three months.

Are you sure this isn't being confused with the "Pro" version???

No sign of the older free version being updated with a commercial version that I can find on the 'net, but some info on the latest 3.x version is here, and about the only site saying anything:
Malwarebytes for Mac 3.0.1.389

Specification: Malwarebytes for Mac 3.0.1.389:
Platforms:Mac OS XVersion:3.0.1.389Licence:Free, for personal-use onlyDeveloper:MalwarebytesDate Added:01 Aug 17

http://www.macworld.co.uk/download/security/malwarebytes-mac-301389-3330511/

Their normal site still says:
Free download comes with a 30-day trial of Premium.

Nothing that I can find say one will have to.

My latest version has been running since 15 Dec, 2016 and says I'm up to date: (I'm currentlly running Mavericks)

But the "Free" Download at their site as mentioned sure does download a Malwarebytes-3.dmg file for me.

Strange… or maybe someone at their site goofed up…???

And PS:

Harryb, are you perhaps running a beta version…???

Malwarebytes for Mac 3 now available

By Chris WilesPublished 3 days ago

Apart from that, there’s not a huge amount of new features. This of this release as a transition period to move the Mac version alongside the Windows edition for future mutual updates.

Malwarebytes for Mac v3 is available now and a Premium version is available for $39.99.

The free version would've remain my choice, however they're limiting the definition updates to the trial period too...
That's a shame.

I believe, once the premium trial ends, you can still use the free version to run scans as needed. You will just lose all the other features.

I posted in the other thread where Harry mentioned it. The Premium is free for 30 days, then pay, but the regular, on demand, version is free, still. Not sure what the lack of automatic updates means. I could be to the engine or to the database. I'll see the the 30 days expires. I don't want it to be resident, so the non-premium is fine for me as long as the threat database is updated.

There is an alternative.

DetectX (shareware/$10 to register)
https://sqwarq.com/detectx/

It's almost an identical program. You can use it for free indefinitely, but there is a launch delay until/unless you register it.

Not much that was posted before mine that actually seems to affect me or my Malwarebytes installation harryb, but thanks anyway for your concern I guess.
