My Magic Trackpad 2 and magic keyboard only work if directly connected via the charging wire.

The Trackpad shows 100% charged on System Preferences so that is not the problem.

I am beginning to wonder whether the upgrade has caused my iMac to forget the two devices.

Severely irritating!!

On further checking the iMac is telling me that bluetooth is not available.

Is this on your 27" 5k iMac? I have 10.11.4 on my 27" quad core iMac i7 and Bluetooth Magic mouse work like normal. If you go to system preferences and Bluetooth, what shows? Is there a clicker to turn it on?

Yes it was on my iMac 5K. Bluetooth was unavailable and it wouldn't let me switch it on (greyed out). I have sorted it now using the first option from http://www.igeeksblog.com/fix-bluetooth-not-available-error-mac/.

Looks like it is an individual problem relating to some aspect of the original set up on 10.11.3. I see from looking on-line that a few people have differing problems on upgrade. That suggests to me that Apple are being a tad careless with some aspects of the upgrade and not properly saving original settings.

As I said it is very irritating when your only two interfaces (the trackpad and keyboard) won't work unless they are connected and you only get one cable with the system. Logging on becomes an effort!

And this morning it happened again!

Shut down last night with both keyboard & trackpad 2 working OK. This morning only the one directly connected worked and Bluetooth unavailable with everything greyed out (http://www.igeeksblog.com/fix-blueto...ble-error-mac/ sorted it out again). The first option didn't work this time but the second one did.

Have to conclude that there is a weakness in 10.11.4 regarding Bluetooth. Apparently doesn't hit everyone but it has never happened to me before the upgrade.

Take it back that is the solution. Never had this problem myself.

I disagree. My Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse 2 work just fine on 10.11.4 on my iMac Late 2014 Retina. Get it working again, then go into Bluetooth and delete everything and re-add it.

As I said it doesn't hit everybody!! But when it does it's an absolute pain. Ironically, I also upgraded my MacxBook Pro at around the same time with no hint of this problem. I don't know whether it depends on hardware, or something else.

So when it happened again this morning, I tried the previous solutions with no luck. So the next step after more searching was to reset NVRAM (see https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204063) which worked.

My wife is going to be very nervous about starting the computer tomorrow morning!!

If it happens again, try resetting the SMC which controls power settings and also BT. SMC reset for an iMac is easy: Shut it down and remove the iMac from AC power. (pull the plug) Let it set for 10 to 15 minutes and start it up again.

I did but it didn't work!

1. Tried deleting bluetooth.plist file in Library preferences. No luck. Did the first time I had the problem.

2. Reset SMC. Didn't work. It did 2nd time I had the problem.

3. Reset NVRAM. Worked. Just need to see what it is like tomorrow.
