When I did mine in mac Pro days, as you have to remove front fan, and rear fan next to memory cage, take them apart, give a good clean and lubricate. The X5355's will be A OK.

Congrats on successfully installing those two "new to you" cpu's. I'm assuming you have 8-cores now.:)

As far as the "About This Mac" issue. I read some info on the internet that mentions updating the firmware to the Mac Pro 2,1 version seems to have corrected things for folks doing this cpu upgrade on a Mac Pro 1,1.

Technically speaking...Mac Pro 2,1's are really just "built to order" Mac Pro 1,1's. So the firmware for Mac Pro 2,1's is really just a more updated Mac Pro 1,1 firmware (probably for properly reporting the 8-cores in a Mac Pro 2,1).

I would recommend doing some internet research before updating to the Mac Pro 2,1 firmware...just so you're completely comfortable with the firmware update before actually doing it. Running firmware updates is serious business...since if you install the wrong update...you could "brick" your computer.

Running the Mac Pro 2,1 firmware update for folks who have upgraded their cpu's on Mac Pro 1,1's does seem to have worked for folks (according to various threads on the internet).

But doing this unsupported firmware update is "AT YOUR OWN RISK"...so if something should go wrong...it's on you! This is part of the risk of "traveling the path less traveled"!;)

Good luck,

- Nick

Congratulations! I bet Handbrake really flies now with 8-cores (compared to before with 4)!:)

I would say that you are now one of the very few Mac-Forums experts when it comes to cpu upgrades on a Mac Pro!

Well worth the small amount of $$/££ for a 4-core to 8-core upgrade!!!:)

105/106F is only about 25F higher than average room temperatures (and only 6 to 7F higher than human body temperature)...so this is certainly not high at all.

156F using Handbrake. Yes this is ok. The computer is working about as hard as it can (all 8 cores)...so the computer temp. will certainly be higher & 156F would not be out of line.

41°C at idle is fine and the 68°C when encoding videos is expected since you'll be pushing those cores.

I saw your other question...but I really didn't have any suggestions (so I stayed out of it).;)

When it comes to computer storage and hard drives. I run things pretty basic. I really haven't gotten too "fancy" setting up RAIDed HD's.
