I am new to OS X but I work in the tech field so i can troubleshoot issues, but i am having difficulty figuring out this one...

I will leave applications (Safari, Mail, etc) open and either close the lid on my laptop or let it go to sleep. When i come back to resume where i left off, i will need to log in again and all of the applications will be closed.

Any thoughts?

When you "log in" are you logging into the same account? As you may know...you can setup multiple accounts on the computer (for multiple users of the same computer). And if you log into a different account...things will/can be different (different apps open/closed...different interface preferences, etc.).

Also...let us know what version of the Mac OS you are running. Sometimes different versions can have different features.

Nick,

Thanks for the quick reply. I only have one user account on the laptop that i consistently log into. I am running OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.1.

Are there any log files that would help diagnose this?

Ok...thanks for the info.

It's possible that you have your computer setup to automatically log you out. Go to:

- Apple Menu
- System Preferences
- Security & Privacy
- At this point you may need to click on the padlock icon on the lower left corner of the window to unlock things (enter password if you have one setup)
- click on the "Advanced" button in the lower right corner

Now look at the options there. Is the box "Log out after ____ minutes of inactivity" checked? If so...then either uncheck it (if you want to). Or realize that this setting may be causing the confusion.

Hopefully this is the answer/solution to the problem.:)

That might be it! It was configured to log out after 60 minutes of inactivity...

I changed that and enabled the screensaver to switch on and require a password.

Thanks for your help! I will let you know if that indeed did fix the problem!

Awesome. Hopefully this cures things.:) Sounds like doing the screensaver password thing is a decent security substitute.
