I just found this pretty handy widget: Maintidget.

What is it?

Maintidget (Maintenance Scripts Widget) is a Dashboard Widget which provides the following functions:

  • Display the last time the daily, weekly, and monthly OS X Maintenance Scripts (a.k.a Cron Tasks) were run.
  • Run the OS X Maintenance Scripts on demand. Just enter your password and click the Run Scripts button. Maintidget is the first Dashboard Widget to provide this feature!

System Requirements:
Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later
It's in Universal Binary code so this means it runs natively on PowerPC and Intel-based Macs.

major revisions/reorg tonight.

  • added a new f.a.q. catagory and split the basic info and troubleshooting into two distinct catagories.
  • moved around some of the Q&As to more appropriate areas.
  • added some basic info (spotlight, menubar, etc).
  • very minor asthetic change - changed section headers and main title to black from gray.

Here's a list of things and procedures Apple suggests when you want to install software on your Mac, Software Installation Quick Assist.

A couple of things that Knowledge Base Article fails to mention is:

- make sure what you are about to install respects your computer specs and OS version

- run Apple's Disk Utility to ensure that your hard drive is in excellent health and repair disk permissions just in case it is needed

- always make a backup before installing any updates (reasons for this are simple: if anything is incompatible or doesn't work, you can always revert to your previous installation. The best backup solution is the SuperDuper! app and an external hard drive)

- before installing the OS updates, unplug all peripherals (except, of course, mouse and keyboard), make sure you have quit all other applications.

This should minimize anything that potentially could go wrong.

Good luck! :girl:

Caught this article off of TUAW, I think. Anyway, it goes on to give a few apps under WinXP and their equivalent in the Mac OS X world. The list is pretty short though (maybe if prompted, the guy can keep the topic alive and keep posting about this in future entries).

Making the switch from WinXP to Mac OS.

Just wanted to give this thread a bump (even if it is stickied).

Recently, I have seen quite a few questions from new users posted in new threads when those same questions have already been answered here.

Don't let a valuable resource like this thread go to waste!

Mucho thanks to eric and all who added content here.

I'm a recent switcher and just found this forum. It is really well written and organized.

Thanks for making the switch even easier!

Cheers, Andrew
