Mac Computer with a USB Super Drive

I recently purchased a new Mac and have a USB Super Drive from my previous Mac. I had to purchase an adapter to go from the new computer to the drive. Is there a way to see what the drive is doing IE; writing, reading or just standing by during the time when it is plugged in? I tried to burn music to a read/write CD and while it was downloading I could not see the drive to determine what song was being downloaded. I am using the ITune portion of the Music app.

I have an apple Superdrive and it works perfectly in my wife's iMac 12.5 " which is 2 years older than mine. Give or take, however it will not work on mine. I plug it directly into the back. She's running Catalina 10:15:7 late 2015 retina. I'm running 12:6:1 Any thoughts as to what gives?
