so the glare shouldn't be a problem...? i remember when i was growing up you could see the whole window reflection in the screen... if i could live through that surely i can put up with a plasma? (and i can put up with the mbp screen!!!)

these are the ones i'm considering- thoughts?

I would definitely go for plasma. Now Bobtomay is right... if you do go to best buy to look at TV's for color or brightness, DONT because they are all shipped to look the brightest and best color. What you do want to look at is smoothness aka 600hz (plasma) 120hz 240hz (lcd or LED). Also just to clarify again when it says LED TV it doesn't necessarily mean that the whole TV is LED. It just means that it is LED backlit just like the macbook pro screens. They did this to get the thin TV like you see on the wall. Now maybe you should wait if you really want thin and borderless and get the LG SL90

LG's Very Pretty "Seamless" SL90 LED TV Slides Out Soon for $2700 - Lg sl90 - Gizmodo

However if I were you and were advised by tons of people is to get the plasma. 600hz looks way better than 240hz which is "trying" to smooth out the picture as best as it can. Plasmas have come a long way. And there are a lot of myths about them. No it won't die that fast. It actually lasts really long. Longer than people will probably have a TV before something better comes out.

Lets put it this way, I've been in the electronics industry for 5 years and I will definitely be getting a plasma TV. Don't fall into the hype of the LED LCD TVs. Yes they are slim but they are not the greatest TV out there... And the Plasmas if none have you recently looked at them are getting QUITE thin.

Hope this helps...

Plasma - Panasonic, good combo! My room is slightly darker than average( 4 windows, but only filtered sunlight) and glare is no problem. At night, the picture is fantastic!

I've been rather lucky as my local Best Buy has them in stock. Lucky because I can go see the TV in person (and show it to my wife), see the size, compare it to the dimensions of the TV stand I want to get, check the weight and a slew of other things before I actually get it. Kind of nice.

Great set at a price that can't be beat. Just put that one in the Family room in Nov. to replace the 65" I had and wall mounted it this time. Liked it enough, bought the 42" model for the Mbrm last month - picked it up at Sears for $100 under Amazons price on a one day sale.

Cheap enough that I'm having the 58" professionally calibrated (3/7) as a first instead of doing it myself. Will let you know if it makes a diff or not.

I have had a trouble free Panasonic plasma for 5 years and the quality is great. It's a 42 so when I upgrade to a 50+ next year, this one will make a great bedroom tv.

My next tv will also be a Plasma....dying technology? Says who? Still has the best picture quality, especially when you hear everyone with LED sets turning the brightness down. There is no advantage to LED over plasma other than energy usage.

I know you've got an appointment for calibration, but if it falls through or you feel so inclined, I do have the Digital Video Essentials DVD (calibration tool) that works great and you're welcome to it.

Additionally, bear in mind that all THX-certified DVDs have a calibration tool built right in that works pretty well and it only takes about 5 minutes.

I've done that with my previous sets. Only reason I'm giving it a go is because I got the TV so cheap. Just wanted to check out for myself what the difference is in their hour and a half job vs my 5-10 minute job.

I'd already called to cancel it once because they didn't want to do it on the weekend and before the "guy in charge" could call me back, they decided they'd better start doing weekend calibrations.

Hello,

I own 2 Plasma Flat Screens. My favorite is the Pioneer PRO 111FD KURO Elite 50". Once you calibrate it and use the ISF Standard, nothing else compares. It is sad Pioneer no longer makes the best Plasma on the market. :(

How does one go about getting such a calibration scheduled/done? Is it through a local service center or through Panasonic itself? What is the estimated cost? Since this is a free TV, it might be worth spending the $$$ to get it calibrated.

Picked mine up from the local BB. They had it on sale as a loss leader one weekend. Their calibration is $200 - expensive - and only went for it because of the bargain I got on the TV. Even with that it was still less than I could find it anywhere else. I'm really wanting to see what adjustments a tech will have available on it that we don't have access to just using the menus.

Having my calibration done about a week after you get your set. I'll let you know what I think after. Have heard anything from 100 hours to 500 hours burn in recommended for Plasmas prior to calibration also, so you've got some time.

See AVS Forum for details. Some ISF Calibrators travel to different States.

I paid $350 for the ISF calibration of my Pioneer PRO 111FD. It should be not too high or too low from what I paid. Special Software is used to open ISF-Day and ISF-Night settings on Pioneer Elite Sets.

It's cheaper to buy the tools and do it yourself. Some TVs require you to access the service menu for a complete calibration though.

Hello,

Yes, you can access the Service Menu. However, some warranties prohibit owners accessing it. So some do take a chance of voiding warranty.

Hey, for the price? You can't beat it. LED is still the better tech, but nice. I doubt you'll be disappointed haha

Darkest, LED is still not as good for motion or blacks, how is it the better tech?
