Sorry, I remembered that Onyx and Tinkertool apps are not Apple supported, nor do they specifically test memory. Try REMBER. I recall it runs as a GUI over MEMTEST, and does check out memory, but it is very thorough and time consuming.

Luck!

Mixing the modules should NOT cause problems provided you have like modules in the same bank - which you stated they are..........

I agree that should not cause a problem. But working with computers for many years and except for the quality and os; Macs are PCs now. The point is, I have seen 20 computers come in needing RAM upgrades and just sticking in new RAM worked, but there is always that one every other month or so that is finicky for some odd reason.

It simply doesn't hurt to try it with the Kingston RAM for a few days. Its not a he's right or she's right situation, just simple process of elimination. This is just normal procedure for messing with strange RAM issues.. :)

Cheers Mate..

He hasn't gotten back to us about trying to re-seat the Kingston modules. But when he pulled them, his machine went back to operating normally. That should tell us that either one or more of the Kingston modules are bad or they're just not seated properly.

I don't know if you have any experience with doing a memory upgrade on a late model iMac? It's easy enough to gain access to the ram slots, the problem is with the slots themselves. They're real tight and require a great deal of pressure in order to get the modules seated correctly. A module that's not seated properly will cause a kernel panic.

I fully agreed with you on the seating issue and recommend he try that first. At least I think I did.. LOL.. Many motherboards have got so tight that I now regularly install the modules on to the boards while on a table before putting the motherboard into a case. I even do the same for the CPU just to make sure the fan/heat-sink set flat and even.

But yes if the modules loose connection it will cause a kernel panic. I have even seen it burn a ram stick up before in a friends computer. (He tried to upgrade it on his on.)

I was just pointing out all the avenues one goes through to check ram and compatibility. :)

Thanks guys, I appreciate the discussion. It is difficult to diagnose the exact problem without being able to look at my iMac yourselves.

I have decided to retain the Apple RAM installed, as that seems to cause no problem and never has since I bought the iMac. Yesterday I added in one of the Kingston sticks. I had read that having an odd number could cause issues, but as of today it has not faulted once. This could mean either a) the remaining Kingston stick could be faulty, or b) I did not have them seated correctly.

I took your advice chscag and used a soft cloth to push it in carefully, but firmly. So far so good, will give it another couple of days and then try toe other stick. I will post back with the results.

Sounds like you're on the way to solving it. Let us know - and don't be afraid to seat those new modules firmly in their sockets.

Hey guys, hope you all had a nice weekend.

It's a bad module. Return both of the Kingston modules for a refund or ask them to send you a new pair. As for the kernel panic dump, the first part shows all the registers and errors.

Remember, you need a matched pair when adding memory so even if one of the modules is OK, you need to replace both. ;)

Hey guys,

So after a couple of weeks I have returned the single faulty stick, and during that time my machine never froze once with 2 x 4gb + 1 x 8gb Kingston. They sent it off, gave me a replacement stick, and all was good for 24 hours. Just now looked at my mac and it crashed again.

What do you think? Could I have had 2 faulty sticks now? Is it the combo of 2 x 8 and 2 x 4 perhaps?

Here is the report:

What do you think? Could I have had 2 faulty sticks now?

Sure looks that way.... You should have replaced both of the 8 GB modules at the same time. While some folks might say that your machine doesn't need a matched pair for best performance, I'm from the old school. I always replace modules in pairs even if only one seems to be defective.

The guy from the PC store said that isn't necessary, so he wouldn't replace it. I might have to take them both back for a refund, will see how it goes.

Could there be a possibility that the 4th slot on my iMac could be faulty in any way?

Anything is possible but it would be highly unlikely that the slot is bad on a brand new iMac. One thing to keep in mind about memory slots in an iMac - they are usually very tight or snug which means that the modules don't always seat correctly. My 2011 iMac was that way and I wound up having to use a soft cloth on my thumbs to seat the modules. I haven't added memory to my late 2013 iMac yet but I may do that in the near future.

Seen that especially on my late 2006 C2d iMac. Got new RAM for it from OWC and thought I had it seated all the way but it would not even go Bong! Pulled them and they were not all the way down. Pressed harder and it works great.

Yeah I tried your technique with all the RAM I have put in, still could be the problem. In saying that (touch wood) it hasn't crashed for a few days in a row, so with any luck!

EDIT - haha wouldn't you know it, **** thing just crashed! Pulled out the RAM, re-seated, will try again. Pretty sure it will keep on happening though. Back to the drawing board.....

Hey guys, an update on my RAM issues... after running continuously for a week or so without crashing on:

2 x original Apple 4gb sticks
1 x Kingston 8gb stick (stick a)

BANK 0/DIMM 0 - 4GB
BANK 1/DIMM 0 - Empty
BANK 0/DIMM 1 - 4GB
BANK 1/DIMM 1 - 8GB

I decided to try it for a few days by swapping the Kingston sticks only. So for the past 4-5 days I have had:

2 x original Apple 4gb sticks
1 x Kingston 8gb stick (stick b)

Same config as above, just different 8gb stick.

This was successful also, not a glitch. This telle me that both the A and B Kingston sticks I have are fine.

Today I thought I would put in stick B and remove one of the original Apple sticks. So now I have:

BANK 0/DIMM 0 - 8GB
BANK 1/DIMM 0 - 4GB
BANK 0/DIMM 1 - 8GB
BANK 1/DIMM 1 - 4GB

It seems to have a problem with all 4 sticks in there only now, but I want to give it another try. After this I will try removing one of the 4's with the 2 x 8's and one 4 in there. I am pushing firmly each time to try and get the sticks seated correctly. To be honest, they don't exactly 'click' into position though, they just kinda 'stick'. Should they be clicking into place?

It says I have 24gb RAM in my system info, I have always checked this and it has never read incorrectly.

When someone doesn't use the basic scientific method to eliminate variables from a equation when trying to determine a cause to an effect, all you get is hopeful and misguided answers.

Just saying.. :Lips-Are-Sealed:

Download this first.. http://osxdaily.com/2011/05/03/memtest-mac-ram-test/

Now. Jerk all the RAM out of the system.

Start with one of the RAM stick in B0D0, preferably one of the 4GB sticks that came with the Mac.
- Then RUN the Memtest..

Then try the other 4GB, then each of the 8GB sticks all in B0D0. Each time running the Memtest. This will make sure all the sticks are functioning properly.
Then try one of the 4GB stick in each of the Mem Banks, each time running the test.
(#) Then try a pair of the 4GB sticks in this pattern, B0D0 & B1D0. Then B0D1 & B1D1. Then B0D0 & B0D1. Each time for each set running the memtest.

Great after doing that you will have confirmed that you RAM slots are functioning in both single and dual channel memory modes.

** Now repeat the 3 same bank test(#) using the 8GB sticks, if this works fine then this eliminates the chance that there is any sort of incompatibility with the new RAM, the chipset and the memory modes.**

Now if that test passes without any hiccups, try the 4GB Stick in B0D0 & B0D1. Also place the 8GB sticks in B1D0 & B1D1. This should if I remember correctly be the proper combination for dual channel memory mode. But if you do have issues with that configuration, then its possible that while the RAM sticks and banks are fine, they just don't like each other.. This happens..

But you can also try them in pairs at B0D0 & B1D0 and B0D1 & B1D1, although this combination does tend to have more issues as it really mixes the RAMs together. The first combination I gave just above is best..

Cheers,
Joe

Personally very leery buying memory from PC stores. They just do not seem to understand Mac requirements. OWC and Crucial, Mzc specialists, are the way to go imho.

Well, after contacting the store, the guy there ordered in a fresh batch of 4 x Kingston 8gb sticks for me, and swapped my other 2 Kingston's over. So I get home, stick the 32gb in and notice the difference immediately.

So I am now running on 4 x Kingston 8gb PC3L 12800 1600MHz Low voltage DDR3 (KVR16LS11/8)

Flash forward 6 hours, I go for a 5 minute break from working on Lightroom (with only Chrome running in the background) and I get back and it has crashed again. I have no idea what to do now, it can't be a RAM issue as I have brand new sticks from the same batch. Could somebody please help me diagnose this problem, it is driving me insane. Here is the report:
