Hello-

I have this NewerTech MAXPower USB/eSATA 2x2 Host Adapter I installed in my system. I have a 2009 Mac Pro that I have upgraded from a 4,1 to a 5,1. I have replaced the CPU and maxed out my PCI slots with an EVA GTX 970 and an OWC SSD card. When I take out the USB 3.0 card the system doesn't panic. I have the most current driver installed on 10.11.4. I have an email to customer service at OWC but does anyone have an idea what could be causing this? Here is the crash report:

Thanks!!!

G'day and welcome to the forums.

Remove all those USB hubs and I assume a Thunderbolt PCI-E card. Connect Apple Keyboard and Apple mouse only and see how it goes. And you have simply upgraded the firmware, not the motherboard etc. There is so much going on power may simply not be enough with what five hard drives, and flash storage card, two optical drives

Hubs?

I don't have any USB hubs hooked up. The PCI-E card has a GTX 970 and a SSD on it. As long as the USB card I installed in the PCI port is not installed I don't get any crashes.

I was wondering if it was drawing too much power. Thanks.

I am guessing here. You are using a Nvidia gtx 970 video card which I am assuming is a PC card that you are loading updated drivers for and not using the default apple drivers.

The kernel panic shows:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task
Boot args: nvda_drv=1 ( <- this is the command to turn off loading apple's default video drivers.)

This would be the command that it hung on which is the command to not load the default apple drivers for your video card.

Obviously the new card is triggering a problem - does it supply power to the devices? Did you use the drivers they supply for the card? You do have a lot of drives attached which draw power. You could be overloading the power supply.

When does the crash occur? There is a known issue with this card and if your MP goes to sleep.

Just some thoughts....

The GTX card is a PC card with web drivers.

The crash occurs intermittently. It's hard to say what causes it because it seems random. If I take the USB card out it doesn't happen. It must be the power I'm guessing.

Is there a way to see if it's drawing too much power? I don't have the energy saver set to sleep.

Thanks!

I did install software to monitor sensors. I did also replace the CPU with a 6-core 3.33 processor. I thought it was the heat at first but I don't think that's the case anymore.

If you used a good thermal paste when you installed the CPU's then heat should not be the issue. I also have a 4,1 that I upgraded to a 5,1 and installed dual 6-core CPU's. I have a Nvidia GTX 780 installed and an Inateck PCI-E to USB 3.0 card and an OWC SSD card in my slots. I use the apple drivers for my video card and keep my CUDA drivers up to date. I also run Sierra - which has proven to be a whole other interesting set of issues.

If my MP goes to sleep, any drives connected to the the Inateck card will cause an error message saying the drives were not ejected properly - even though I did not remove the drives. But I can ignore it and the drives are fine and still mounted. It is a know annoyance. But I am wondering if the card you are using is creating a different issue (obviously) due to the pickiness of the MP's system. That card already had a know issue if the computer goes to sleep and I could find no information saying that had been fixed.

There could also be an issue with the graphic card driver and the USB card driver.

One thing you could try is to create a new user and see if it happens. That would eliminate a corrupt user account. You said you plan to call OWC. Post back and let us know if they have a solution.

BTW: There is a device you can purchase that will tell you how many watts your MP is pulling. It is cheap and I use it to figure out what size UPS I need to get. You might take a look at it.

Blurgh!

So OWC has informed me that the card is not supported past 10.8.2. I'm on 10.11.4

Well that is good to know. I read the description on the website for it and I never caught that. So I will assume you are sending it back. Actually it is good to know it was nothing to do with your system.
