Ok I used to use firefox on my windows pc so i thought i would download it onto my new macbook but after a few i realized that safari was just as good. so i went to delete my firefox by placing the icon from the applications folder into the trash bin, but now i still have the firefox icon in the upper right of my desktop. How the heck to I get rid of that thing? I tried dragging it to the trash bin but when I do that the trash bin turns into the eject key. Go ahead and flame me all you want but I just need help.

Most Mac software comes in the form of a DMG file. That DMG file is what is known as a "disk image", meaning, when you double-click on it, it "mounts" to your desktop as though you had just inserted a disc. From there, you open the virtual disc and drag and drop the application inside of it onto your Applications folder to install it. It sounds like what you have left on your desktop is the mounted disk image. When you drag it to the trash, it turns into an "eject" symbol because dropping it onto the trash will eject that virtual disc (i.e. exactly what you want it to do). So, believe it or not, you're on the right track!

Go ahead and flame me all you want but I just need help.

We try to avoid that kind of behavior here at Mac-Forums.com. Welcome and we hope you enjoy your stay here.

And some of us prefer Firefox over Safari. Find it much more responsive and less prone to not opening web site pages.

Furthermore, although I guess it may not worry you if you are in the States, Google in Firefox offers world search and Australia search. Safari does not, offers world only.

Another newbie, same problem

I have the same problem; I downloaded a new app in the form of a dmg file, installed the app, now I have this disk icon stuck on my desktop. I don't want to eject the disk, because it shows up whenever I boot my Mac. I want to delete it permanently.
