10-4. Put the drive back and upgrade it to OS 10. You still need to check that the boot rom is 4.1.9 before you install 10. Then put the new drive in an external firewire or USB box and be done.

Yeah...this sounds like a cheaper & faster approach to getting OS 10 on this computer!

Ok I think I'm good so now I have the new OS X in the computer it's booted and now I'm on the screen that's asking me, "Click install to perform a basic installation of this software package on the volume Startup HD." Will this erase everything on my hard drive?

Do NOT format the drive with OS 10. We will right back at the beginning. You will lose the Boot rom update. Just do the install. If you plan to use OS 9 apps, check the box that says install OS 9 drivers.

iMac G4 hard drive upgrade

Okay now I'm having another issue. Before I updated the firmware on the G3 I tried booting the OS X disc and it booted but I didn't install it until I made sure I got the right firmware, but the disc did load. Now I downloaded the right firmware, saved it to a disc and updated the firmware. I got the message on the G3 stating that the firmware was updated successfully. But now when I try booting from the OS X disc I get a circle with a / through it. What does this mean?

Can you still boot in 9.2 ? Boot in 9.2 then insert the 10 disc. Click on the icon open the installer window click install. Start with install disc one.

Yeah I did that and it asked me to restart the computer. Once it restarted it started installing the OS X. So far so good. It's on 25% complete.

SUCCESS! Mac OS X 10.4 has loaded successfully. Thank you for all your help. But how do I copy the current 60 gig hard drive to the other 120 gig hard drive?

You could buy an enclosure and use the 60gb as a portable....the enclosure would have USB or firewire (did the G3 have Firewire?) and transfer the files that way...

I would not mess with the start up drive. Just use the 120g drive as an external. It will show up on the desktop as a drive and you can save files to it. Your going to have to format that drive when you hook it up as a USB or Firewire. The imac G3 you have is USB one.

The G3 has two firewire ports. Does this help?

Yes there are two. They are not as fast as a New Mac but are faster than the USB which is USB one. You risk messing up the machine again just to clone the big drive and have it internal. It will work just as well in an External box as a second drive. You will gain all that storage and have the small internal drive hold the OS.

If this is your first time going beyond that little back-slot where you install various things, I recommend that you plan everything very carefully and print out instructions to follow. Be wary of electromagnetic charges.

Just wondering, why would you need to upgrade the hard drive of a g3 running 9.2? Doesn't it already come with about 60 gigs, which is more than enough to store the compact files apple designed for the classic systems.

Thank You....All this upgrading to the next OS point makes no sense to me. I can see it if you bought a new app that requires it to run..otherwise your just adding more bloat to the system on machines not designed for it.
