Most ISP companies offer free AV or you can download it for free from some companies so there really is no excuse not to run it. As an IT professional I would never recommend a Windows computer without AV.

Amen to that! A Windows machine without protection can easily be used as a "Bot" to attack other machines without ever arousing suspicion from the owner.

With free AV and anti malware suites available (Microsoft Security Essentials) there really is no reason for not installing one.
