I'd like to know also. I'm trying to use a Magic Trackpad with my MBP and the built-in trackpad can be a nuisance.

Ooops! Look at that date. Didn't realize this thread was so old . . .

Go to the Universal Access preference pane and click on the Mouse and Trackpad section. Then click Trackpad options near the bottom of the pane. One of the options that pops up is Ignore built in trackpad. Click that one.

How very simple. Thanks!

i am having the exact same problem. i have an aluminum MBP running OS X 10.5.8. i can't find the disable trackpad option anywhere in the trackpad settings or in the universal access pane. do i just need to upgrade to snow leopard in order to get that feature these days?

edit: the only thing even close is an option in the mouse and trackpad section of universal access to "ignore trackpad with MOUSE KEYS in on"

I have Lion so I'm not sure how earlier versions work. Go to:

System preferences > Universal Access > Mouse & Trackpad > Trackpad Options > Ignore built-in trackpad when mouse or wireless trackpad is present.

Hope this helps.

Hope this thread is still alive. I've read through it all and:

I have version 10.5.8
Attached (screen capture 4) is what I see in the System Pref>Universal Access>Mouse&Trackpad window
There is no way of switching off mouse in System Pref>trackpad (screen capture 5)

Any help?

Thanks

What mouse do you have?

Most mice have a switch on the underside you can flick on or off.

FlipBook, I have a MacBook Pro and just followed the instructions in Post #24 to switch off the trackpad when I'm using a mouse. It works for me.

Trackpad

Go to System Preferences, Accessibility and you'll find it under Trackpad options. Brand new Mac Pro with OS X. Hope this helps.
