@BrianLachoreVPI...looks like you're having a fun time running all of the benchmark tests this evening on that new iMac...this is the 3rd score I've seen!;)

Reran xBench after installing the SSD, got 319.84.

And then I realized I forgot to close all my other apps.

Wow...319 is a pretty high score. I'm thinking that in some small way an SSD maybe a bit unfair...since someone in this thread said that the last time Xbench was rewritten was 2006...before SSD drives were commonly available (or maybe not at all).

So I don't know...maybe the individual scores in Xbench would need to be rebalanced (as well as Xbench only supports up to 4 cores, not 6, 8, or 12-core Mac Pro's).

On the other hand...many reviews have said that the SSD drives in computers make them seem much faster than the computers cpu ghz level would indicate. For example a 2.0ghz cpu laptop with an SSD drive may feel as fast as a computer with a 2.2 or 2.4ghz cpu & a traditional hard drive. So maybe this Xbench score is actually fairly quantifying the increased performance effect of an SSD drive!:)

p.s. I just checked...and a score of 319.84 is the highest Xbench score so far...and the highest score by a pretty large margin. Next highest is somewhere around 247. So that SSD drive is really improving the Xbench score.

That 319.84 is only a few points lower than running the xBench test without having the drive on the test, so yeah, the SSD is a massive improvement.

Macbook Pro 17" latest series with 8gb ram and 128gb ssd

Can you list your computers specs? When someone reads this thread in 6-12 months...and is looking for some info...now one is going to know what is meant by..."Macbook Pro 17" latest series"?.

Even currently (via custom configuration) there's at least 2 different versions of the 17" MacBook Pro.

Thanks,

- Nick

Wow. It's really clear what a difference an SSD makes to an Xbench score. Very nice. :)

I've had three different iMacs in the last two (?) weeks. I bought a dual core on the Saturday before the new Quads came out, then decided to upgrade, so I swapped only to find out they'd given me one with a 500 GB HD instead of the 1TB once I drove the hour and a half home. So off I went again to trade that one for the 1TB Quad, and that is what I have now.

This is my first Apple since the GS, and the IIe before that. I bought my son a 13" MBP for a graduation gift and was smitten all over again. After so many years fighting Windows, I've come over to the bright side at last.

I'm hoping my specs show up here somewhere, or I'll come back and add them.

I'm a proud owner of a macbook. I've just had this piece of perfection for 5 months now. When i compare my score with some of you guys i'm a little disappointed. This thing has costed me $3300 (2400 euro). I'm going to upgrade some parts very soon!

Here we go..

Macbook pro 17 inch mid 2010 model
Intel core i7, 2.66 Ghz (@ boost 3,2Ghz), L3 Cache 4MB
4GB RAM DDR3 1067Mhz (Going to replace this with 8GB) <-- Average score
500GB 7200rpm HDD (Going to replace this with SSD) <-- Average score
NVIDIA Geforce GT 330M 512MB (1900x1200)

will create a new table this weekend to match BrianLachoreVPI's rather outstanding one in the GB thread, including the new posts.

...and turn off all unnecessary background processes
Before I start running this on my two machines (1999 G4 PowerMac running Panther and 2008 Mac Pro 3.1 running Snow Leopard), can anyone give me a list of which background processes are safe to switch off?

ADDED LATER:

OK, 4pm and no answers forthcoming, so I went ahead, shut down every application and ran the tests:

PowerMac G4 Graphite (AGP/Sawtooth)
1.4GHz Sonnet CPU
2GB PC100
80GB System drive (65GB free space)

G4_Xbench_results.jpg

2008 Mac Pro 3,1 Dual Quad-core 2.8GHz
12GB PC2-6400
320GB System drive (170GB free space)

MP_3-1_Xbench_results.jpg

Verdict: to be honest, given that the Mac Pro has 8 x as many processors all running at twice the clock speed of the G4 and 6 x as much RAM running at 8 x the bus speed, I expected a bigger difference. A lot bigger.

ADDED LATER STILL!

OK, now I've seen pigoo3's post about Xbench under-reporting on 8-core Mac Pro machines. That might go some way to explaining things...
