I like Adobe CS4. I use Photoshop CS4 and Illustrator CS4. To add to that, I use Lightroom 2.2. I used to use free softwaer equivalents like GIMP and Inkscape, but I just never got used to them because I started with Adobe CS and CS2. I moved back when I got my MacBook Pro.
If you just use Photoshop, then you might as well get Pixel. It's $45 right now, and it's available for every platform. It supports some features that Photoshop doesn't have. The best part is that it has everything GIMP has as well CMYK support and 16-bit and 32-bit color per channel, so you can actually do real HDR with it. I use it on FreeBSD along with XaraLX and digiKam.
