Horrible Write Speed!!!! HALP!!!

please,
any advice would be greatly appreciated!

i own a 24 in, 2.16 intel core 2 duo imac, with 2 GB of ram, and a 250 GB HDD,
i wanted to earse and install due to desire for a clean slate of my home PC,
and now when installing ANYTHING (ie: chrome, firefox, vuze, etc) it takes FOREVER to copy into the applications folder!

Did i do something wrong?
Should i go back and do another clean wipe?
is the HDD fried?
i am using my OSX disc ( 10.6.3 )

HALP!

Your Mac's Specs
MacMini 14.3, 8.1 & 4.1, OS 13.5, 10.14, & 10.11 & 10.6; Macbook Pro 8.2, OS 10.12.
Boot with your OS X disk and use Disk Utility > Disk First Aid to run a hardware check on your iMac hard drive.
