Hi,
I have home full of iPhones, ipads and mac 🖥️ to top it all. Is there good home cloud (NAS) storage device that could all of them back up to instead of iCloud in UK? WD home cloud seems to stop supporting/updating Mac side.
Thanks

What makes you think that? I have two WD NAS servers and both work with my Mac just fine. I don't use them for Time Machine, but I do use cloning software for a backup to them.

Essentially. All of those network conntected storage devices fall into the category of Network Attached Storage (NAS). WD calls them various names to try to show the novices what they can be used for. Is it exactly the same? I don't know, but I don't think it really matters much.

Funny you should mention that. We just had a long discussion about a new device from Synology on another Macintosh forum. It's a personal/private cloud device that is aimed at ordinary users (unlike Synology's other NAS products, which tend to be more complex and aimed at businesses), and it is quite reasonably priced:

Synology BeeStation
$219 for 4 TBytes.

It connects to an existing router via Ethernet.

Apears I've been misinformed about that. Person, probably, ment that:
IMPORTANT:
Newer WD SES Drivers are NOT available for download from Western Digital.
They are ONLY available through Windows or macOS updates.

Here are some reviews.

If you are a technically adept individual, you might instead prefer the Synology DiskStation DS120j, which is priced similarly once your put your choice of raw drive in it, but which offers more features and performance. But also more complexity.

Synology DiskStation DS120j

$107

Thanks, Randy, I wasn't aware of that device.

I have one of the Synology 4-bay NAS devices. Initial configuration was a pain, so I can see where it would be daunting to some users.

I noticed this new device must be connected to the router via Ethernet. The same is true for my device which isn't practical for us right now. I found a workaround that solves the issue for me and might work with this new device. I connected the Synology box to my Mac Mini via Ethernet and turned on Internet Sharing.

This might/might not work with the new device. I don't remember if I set up a static IP address. I've been running this configuration for months. If there is a degradation in performance it certainly hasn't been noticeable with the tasks most users would be performing.
