Two G4's running MacOS 10.4.11
Hi, there.

I have a 533 MHz G4 running MacOS 10.4.11 with high speed (cable) internet access. On line streaming video (YouTube, for example) is unwatchable; I get about 1 frame per second and herky-jerky audio. My wife's newer iMac shares the connection and doesn't have this problem.

A friend has suggested that the video card may be what's causing it; he says that even the audio would be affected by the video card's passing too much work over to the CPU. Is that feasible?

Right now, System Profiler shows the card as being ATY, Rage 128 Pro on the AGP bus with 16MB VRAM. Out on Another World (MacSales), I see a Radeon 7500 for about $60; might this solve my problem?

Cheers,

I'll check that. Thanks.

Someone answered this ? the other day and I was trying to find it. Allso your Browser may not be the best one for your CPU speed as Ytube changed its format recently. Having Max memory can only help as well. Others here know more about Video cards.:|

I do not think a 7500 would solve the problem. Major issue is the slowness of the processor alas at 533MHz. You can boost your DA up to 1.5GB memory, PC133 Mac memory and not PC memory, and try an ATI Radeon 9000 Mac Pro or similar card, with 128 and preferably 256MB memory.

A better graphics card will help but you have got to as yourself a question.

Do you save up the money spend to a new mac, or even a second hand Mac mini or whatever.

Sometimes spending bucks bringing an older mac up to speed is simply better placed on a savings account for a newer mac.

I bought myself a new ATi 9600 512mb VRAM card. Great card for a G4, now I can edit HD!

Yea. I use FCS and I could not even playback SD in the timeline! I install the new card and now I can edit HDV! I am having problems with my neighbors Red One though! :)
