I am no longer able to create new sub folders in my Finder window
The File/New folder command (shift/cmd/N) is greyed out
I have been able to work around by creating a new folder on the dektop and dragging it to the folder I want to put the subfolder in
Can anyone help please?

Sounds like it might be a permissions issue. Have you tried running Permissions Repair in Disk Utility.

Try another user account and see if the problem is there too.

Then you create another one for testing purposes.
