Finder closes after closing a file

When I close a file, Finder will also close. I'd like Finder to stay open after closing files or folders.
I know it's probable a setting somewhere but I can't find it.

What does "close a file" mean? Where are you closing it? How are you closing it?

Also, what do you mean by "Finder will also close"? Do you mean that you have to relaunch Finder, or do you mean that the Finder window showing the file closes
