RESOLVED:

Before going away for 10 days I backed up to Time Machine and turned my iMac off. When I got back I turned it on, got the Apple logo and the line below filled and stopped nothing more.

I've tried restarting several times unsuccessfully. What can have gone wrong?

Mac specs please? Also, do you have a USB bootable Mac OS X/OS X/macOS installer, or a separate bootable Mac OS X/OS X/macOS drive? They are good to have, just in case of situations like this.

When you left for the 10 days did you completely disconnect the iMac from power or did you just turn it off and leave it? By disconnecting from power I mean removing it from the AC receptacle.

Disconnect from the ains power for half an hour or so, depress the on/off button to drain things, re-connect and give it a go.

Thanks Harry,

I've tried that but no luck. I have back up to external HD Time Machine, also Time Capsule. I also have CCC backup to external HD. Oh, and specs are for iMac 2014 as in my profile.

Since my last reply I have contacted Apple. We tried booting up with Shift but still no luck and so restarted with cmd alt r, download and reinstall MacOS. That all took up about an hour with a very patient Apple staff member and I took an incident number and rang off while download and install took place. That has now finished and, once again, I have the Apple logo and little white line.

Does the bootup finish or does it get stuck at the white line?

RESOLVED

Thank you all for your help. I ended up doing what I should have done at the off, which is restore from backup. All working fine now.
