Your Mac's Specs
2011 27" iMac, 1TB(partitioned) SSD, 20GB, OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan
That sounds like a good move and I usually recommend and use WD drives.

And it sounds like the Toshiba Canvio drive problems with various MacBooks hasn't been resolved yet, even many years later from these reports:

Toshiba Acknowledges MacBook Woes in Canvio USB 3.0 Hard Drives
Toshiba Canvio drives failing to connect to MacBooks | Electronista

etc., etc.... :( :(

I didn't check for this previously.

Edit:
And a slightly updated article:
http://www.phonenews.com/toshiba-co...s-mac-owners-canvio-drive-replacements-20062/

And apparently they can be made to work properly some found by connecting the drive via even a cheap unpowered USB hub. But why bother... ??? They should just work without such an extra workaround. :D

Hi, I have been told to use only 7200rpm drives for this type of use.

That advice is more for importing digital video into video-editing programs such as iMovie so that you don't drop any frames during the importation process, but for those still on hard drives (and that includes myself) 7200rpm is generally better than 5400rpm overall if you have the option.
