That sounds like a good move and I usually recommend and use WD drives.
And it sounds like the Toshiba Canvio drive problems with various MacBooks hasn't been resolved yet, even many years later from these reports:

I didn't check for this previously.

And apparently they can be made to work properly some found by connecting the drive via even a cheap unpowered USB hub. But why bother... ??? They should just work without such an extra workaround.
