I have a late 2016 MBP, which, of course, has no optical reader. I use it primarily like a desk top, with an external monitor and magic mouse. It also has only two Thunderbolt 3 access ports, thus necessitating the use of a dongle and a hub with USB connections to a attach the peripherals, external HD, printer, and wired Apple keyboard. I recently bought a external drive with a USB 3 connection, but when I plug it in through the hub, the computer does not recognize. The directions, which are mostly in Chinese with a minimum of English, say that you have to plug the drive into the computer directly, which I cannot do. I have no more ports on the dongle. I could shelling out another $50 or so bucks for a Thunderbolt 3 to USB 3 adaptor, but that is more than the drive costs, and is not worth the cost or the effort. Is there a way around this dilemma? The DVD drive would be a convenience not a necessity. Thanks of any ideas.
