I am on OS X 10.8.2 running Excel 2011 (Version 14.3.1). When I go into Preferences, View, and check "Show formula bar by default", it never remembers this selection. It will as long as Excel stays open, for new worksheets, but when I close Excel and re-open the box has become un-checked. Even if I select View Formula Bar for a particular worksheet, the next time I open the worksheet it has become un-checked. I tried writing a simple macro but that didn't work either.

Find the Excel plist file and delete it.
For more specific help, you're gonna have to supply your OS version.

I am on OS X 10.8.2 (12C60). I don't know what the plist file is. Spotlight shows me pList1.glo, pList2.glo, inflo.plist and various InfoPlist.strings files.

Ok, this is where I need help. The Library folder with your user account's Preferences folder, where you'll find a file called com.microsoft.excel.plist is hidden in your OS. Since I'm still using 10.5.8 I can't recall how to reveal it.

Once found, move it to your Desktop

I'm afraid I cannot find the file. May have to contact Microsoft. Thank you so much for trying to help!

Can't someone using Lion/ML give the OP directions on opening the Library folder, and me, a Leopard user, a refresher?
