I just installed a new Epson printer, but it is listed five times under Printers and Scanners. I don't know if I accidentally installed it five times. How can I remove the extra printers and if I don't, will it cause any problems? Everything appears to be working OK.

Go to System preferences > Printers & Scanners, select #5, highlight and hit the little (-) button, then on to # 4 etc. until you have only one left. The printer is working okay?

Be careful removing any of them. I know for a fact that Epson all in one wireless printers will show up twice under Printers and Scanners. Once as a USB connected printer, and again as wireless. However, it should not be listed five times.

Selecting each "printer", you should be able to tell what version each is in the queue window and if they might be duplicates.

Also, some could be for wireless printing and some may be for USB or network and others could be of scanning.

I deleted all printers and now am trying to add the correct printer. Right now I have a printer connected via AirPrint. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I keep getting all kinds of messages. "Scanner in Use";; Event Manager - "cannot communicate with scanner."; Communication Error - Check if a computer is connected". I am getting very frustrated. How can this be fixed? Printing and copying works fine. I just have issues with scanning from the control panel. I have no problems scanning with the Epson scanning software.

This morning everything worked fine. I was so happy. But that didn't last long. I am so frustrated. In System Preferences under Printers and Scanners I now have two entries for the Epson-XP830 Series. They are both AirPrint. One of them has a location of Helen's Mac-mini and the other one has no location. When I installed the printer, I wanted to connect it to my computer (wired). I have a laptop running Windows 10. When I install this printer on that computer, I want it to be wireless. I keep getting messages that there is no computer connected. Where did I go wrong?

Because you're wanting to use the Epson-XP830 with both Macs and Windows, I'd suggest using its control panel to set it up, do so as a wi-fi printer/scanner and do not connect it to your Mac via USB if your OS X suggests doing so.

Apple seems to have most printer/airprint install directions all screwed up in my experience and just use the manufacturers directions, and for those for your unit, have a read at these:
https://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?UseCookie=yes&oid=273279&infoType=Doc
https://files.support.epson.com/docid/cpd4/cpd42851/index.html

And if it's available, use the browser on-line method for the setup, but I'm not sure Epson has or uses them.

I followed the instructions on the website and I disconnected the USB cable. It worked once. Then the messages came again: "The scanner cannot be used right now or it is already in use". "Check if the scanner is ready to be used". "Try again later or select another computer". What about settings in the Epson Software? Should any settings change there?

Should I try setting up my Windows laptop or should I wait until this is worked out?

It sounds like something thinks you still have a spooled print or scan job that hasn't finished and need to be purged.

Maybe time to reset the device???

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201539

I think most Epson printers also have some reset procedure if needed.

Now the two printers listed in my Mac preferences one is and not connected and the other one says "The scanner is in use by application 'Epson ICA Scanner'". What is this?

Would resetting delete my HP printer?

Quit the 'Epson ICA Scanner' app, then I'd shut down the printer and the Mac and then turn on the printer and then the Mac and give it a while and then check your printing.scanning options.

Resetting may delete the printer, I'm not sure.

Maybe try after trying the restarts if it didn't fix things as it isn't working the way it's currently configured.

How do I quit the "Epson ICA Scanner" app? I can't find it anywhere.

How do I quit the "Epson ICA Scanner" app? I can't find it anywhere.

If it's not showing in the Your Dock, it will be in your Activity Monitor (Go (menu) > Utilities folder) but it may be a background app and only works if you have any scanning window open.

There's a good chance that it might actually be using the Image Capture app. Maybe some member that uses the Epson printer/scanner software can chime in to help.

Shutting down will definitely make it quit but I don't know what that may leave behind, like a partly finished spool job.

EDIT:
Actually, I just did a quick search and the "'Epson ICA Scanner' app is just the scanner driver to use with Image Capture.

Edit 2:

BTW, what Mac OS X version are you running on your Mac???

I'm using OSX 10.9.5; 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

I did reboot the computer and the ICA message went away. I can't find that app anywhere.

If it is a background process, which it probably is given Patrick's info, it won't show up in the app folder. If it is truly a background process there will be little indication that it is open short of going into Activity Monitor and looking for it. Rebooting the computer should have shut the process down. It probably won't reappear unless something attempts to use the scanner.

Don't worry about it, it's software that is linked to and used with your AIO Epson printer and scanning for use with Image Capture and will probably be in the: Library/Image Capture/Devices/EPSON Scanner.app/Contents/Plugins/.ICASingle.bundle.

It won't show normally as it's invisible and is so on purpose.

If you open Image Capture and select your Epson in Devices, that .ICA software will probably come into play. Just as it's supposed to do. It's a background thing and not meant for direct user use other that any scanning options the scanning window provides.

I hope that sort of makes sense… ;)

It sort of makes sense. I did find it in image Capture. But how do I fix my problem with scanning from the control panel?

Ahem…. not to be too rude, but you might want to check Epson's support site and make things easier and quicker for yourself, i.e.:
https://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store...63102263&foid=285269&cat=237989&subcat=237998
https://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?oid=273279&infoType=FAQs

And I didn't check, but I'm assuming that scanning from the Epson XP-830 control panel works with a wireless connection, not all printer/scanners do.

You're not being rude and I did go to Epson's support site. I'm waiting for their reply. My printer appears to be working with the wireless connection. It just won't scan from the control panel on the printer. I did install their scanning software so at least I can scan from my computer.

OK. Thanks ;)

What bothers me a bit and they don't make it clear as to what connection is required to do such control panel scanning in their more recent article:https://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store...63102263&foid=285269&cat=237989&subcat=237998

Yet on an older article, they say:
"Note: With Mac OS X 10.6/10.7, you must connect your product with a USB cable to scan using the buttons. …"
https://files.support.epson.com/htm...sks/starting_scan_buttons_art730_tx730wd.html

But those are some pretty old OS X versions and probably for older printers as well.

And not even that clear here as I try and decipher what they say and without proper details:

To scan to your computer, select how you connected your product to your computer:
If your product is connected directly to your computer with a USB cable, select USB Connection.
If your product is connected to your computer over a network, select the computer name from the list.
Press the Start button to start scanning.

https://files.support.epson.com/docid/cpd4/cpd42851/index.html

Good luck with any support reply you get…
