I recently sold my old G5 dual 1.8 and purchased a dual core 2.3 mainly for the access to pci-express so that I could run CS4. I also got a nice surprise when i realized that my mac also uses DDR2, however I want to upgrade it because it came to me with a random assortment of 256mb sticks, and i would like to just drop 4 1gb stick of ecc ram in it, my question is, i have 533 Ram in it, can it use the speed of ddr2 800 or will it clock it down to 533,

for those who dont want to read a lot or missed my question in the small story above

Can my G5 use DDR2 800 or will it clock it down to the speed of ddr2 533 ram?
Thanks

Your dual core calls for PC2 4200 @ 533 MHz DDR2 ECC or NECC SDRAM. (And must be installed in matched pairs.)

My guess is that you can not use the DDR2 800 MHz modules without causing problems or at least clocking it down to 533 MHz. My recommendation is to purchase the correct modules (533 MHz) and avoid problems.

Nice machine, BTW.

Regards.

97.6% sure that it will clock down to 533MHz, and you will want to buy 533MHz RAM, otherwise it may get tempermental.
