No one has ever said anything to me about getting a iMac. However, I am usually the one they call to help with there PC if they have issues, need an upgrade , etc. I never went to school or anything just kind of learned a few things on my own. Anyway, never used a iMac until I bought this one around a month ago. Even though I gave up some knowledge about the computer I am using, I would never go back. Like other members have posted, I actually enjoy using my iMac no matter what I am working on.

Back in the day (late 80s early 90s) it was not uncommon for the salespeople at computer shops to push PCs even if the store also sold Macs.

Man...do I remember the dirty, dark, dank, dingy little corners in the back of the store (where no one ever went)...where the Mac's/Apple products used to be displayed (if you could call it that)! Talk about NOS (New Old Stock)!;)

Opening the Apple Stores was one of the best ideas Apple ever had!:)

I don't know if you noticed, but I didn't actually refer to them as "friends"... just "other Windows programmers" My best friend switched to a Mac a week after he saw mine in action.

My mistake, too... I didn't even realize I put that in the title. Sorry about that. However, the truth is that my best friends don't bug me about it at all. It's more co-workers that bring it up. Funny thing... one friend had switched before me. When he found out I had an iMac, he called to say he had been praying for me, that I would see the light :)

I too used to be one of those guys who ridiculed Mac users for having bought a computer that was 3 times as expensive as a PC.

Then, in 2005, I got a job at a movie prop house in North Hollywood, CA. I found out that most people who work in the entertainment industry use Macs, and I hardly ever see a client using an Android phone. As I casually caught glimpses of clients' Mac screens, I became more intrigued with the idea of Mac. They kept telling me how wonderful Macs are, how virus- and malware-free, and that I should go to the Apple Store to try one out for myself.
Well, I *FINALLY* did that this May - I went into the store and played with one for about an hour, and asked the very helpful "Blue Shirts" many questions. I went home to think about it some more, then ordered a refurbished MacBook Pro retina 15" from Apple online. I received it the next day, and I keep asking myself, "Why the **** did I wait so long!???" My only regret is that I didn't pay extra to get the 750GB SSD storage option - I have 250GB. But I've worked around that by keeping my entire iTunes library on an external HD (which isn't bad, since I listen to music almost exclusively on my iPhone 5 or iPad, and usually only connect the drive to perform iPhone and iPad backups, or to watch the occasional movie).

I run Windows 7 on it as a Boot Camp partition, because I have a few old MIDI and music synthesizer control programs which only run in Windows, and also a couple of older Windoze-only games.

You will be amazed at the amount of members we get here that say they have recently moved to Mac for one reason or another, and how they now understand the statement a lot of people use "Once you go Mac, you will never go back".

Touché :)

For those folks who are new to Macintosh computers (and haven't heard this statement before)...one thing that is said many times about Mac's is..."They just work!":)

I was in love with my Win 7 Lenovo Thinkpad till I finally decided to get a Mac again. I've had a migraine for the last 2 hours trying to reinstall Windows on it to give it away to someone. :\

No one gives me grief for using a Mac. The few that even notice, or care, what OS I use usually shrug and ask if it runs Citrix (for access to work). I say yes, they are happily surprised, and that's about it. Little drama.

Well, let's see. When I originally bought the Mac mini that I'm typing on and shared the news in a Usenet newsgroup, a Windows troll ridiculed me quite emphatically. On the other hand, once when I was sharing my experiences with a Windows upgrade on my Windows machine (also on Usenet), I was told to "Get a Mac."

It seems to go both ways. I normally don't criticize people for their choices, and I expect the same in return.

It's also fair to say that in my case I've had issues with both my Mac mini and my Windows boxes. The Mac mini probably not as much ... I mean, sometimes applications freeze or I have to reset the machine ... but then again, I think I push my Windows machines a little further and use them more, so I'm bound to have more problems with them. Compared to the old days, I think it's safe to say that Windows is more stable and recovers from errors more gracefully.

Use what works! If that's a Mac, then more power to you, or whatever you like. Not everything can be explained with a plain old spec sheet.

It just occurred to me ... I probably should have responded a little bit more on-topic ... the answer is, no, my friends have never given me grief for buying a Mac, because I have open-minded friends. My best friend, Brian, and I grew up together with Apple ][ machines, so we understand the appeal of the brand.

You've lived a "charmed" Mac computing life (and have good open-minded friends)!:)

Try owning a Mac back in the 1980's or 1990's (which I did). But even then...I didn't have "computer friends" (Macintosh or Windows)...so computer ownership ridicule was really never an issue. But I was aware of how other Mac owners would get hassled about owning a Mac.

Of course this sort of thing only got worse with the evolution of the internet in the mid-1990's.

Now that Mac's and Apple products are more mainstream (iPods, iPhones, iTune's, App Store, etc.). Owning a Mac is much more acceptable...even to many Windows users (at least a lot more than it used to be).:)

I'd like to think we can live in a world where platforms can talk to one another, and it doesn't matter what kind of computer you use as long as you can communicate and exchange data and files with other users. Surely at the beginning of the PC revolution this was not the case, but now you can get online with a Mac, a regular PC, a Chromebook, an Android tablet, whatever. If you run Office and your friend who has a Mac runs Office and you want to share a document, you can. You can look at your friend's vacation photos on any platform because they're just JPEGs. Etc.

Personal computers are a kind of religion sometimes, and I don't know why. Is it because they say something about ourselves?

Unfortunately this is a dream world...which isn't limited to just the computer brand/OS someone uses. It also applies to:

- what car someone owns
- favorite sports team
- favorite TV program
- neighborhood someone lives in
- high school or college someone attended
- etc. etc.

Norwood is a Mid-2010 15 inch MacBook Pro with 10.11.1.
My brother and cousin both initially made fun of me for getting my first Mac when I went off to university. Fast-forward ten years and both of them have owned at least one Mac and one iPhone each. As for me, I no longer have that first Mac (rest in peace, Ian the Power Mac), but I still have its successors, Kitty (an iBook) and Norwood (a MacBook Pro), the latter of which I am happily typing on now.

At the moment, I'm trying to save my housemate's ancient Windows laptop, and it makes me more and more grateful that I have a Mac.

Actually, aside of the occasional 17 year old at the house, not many complaints. But when the same kid sits down at your dell laptop, half hazardly searching for an internet explorer icon... You just gotta wonder what kind of debate you're getting into when he says "Google Chrome gets you all the viruses."

Wait, could it be chrome... or could it be the collection of .exe files you downloaded when searching downloadable porn? Bananas people! Avoid those **** .exe files. lol
