It depends on exactly what model MacBook Pro this is (2010-2011 may not be specific enough)...and what OS version was installed on the HD.

Sure, why not just purchase an external USB (or whatever other connection you might have or want) enclosure and install the hard drive into it and connect it.

USB is an affordable standard.

If the hard drive is from a mid-2012 13" Macbook pro, the drive will physically fit inside any Macbook pro from 2010 and 2011. If the replacement is a mid-2010, early 2011, or late 2011, these are capable of running Sierra and, if they were running Sierra, the drive from the 2012 will probably boot the replacement without a problem.

If the damaged Macbook is a mid-2012 13" and the replacement is a Macbook pro that's an early 2011 or late 2011 13", the motherboard from the mid-2012 will fit inside the 2011. The mounting holes and connectors line up perfectly. Of course, this is only useful information if the 2012 motherboard is fully functional.

Yes, just to be clear, that's to buying an external USB ENCLOSURE for a 2.5" HDD that you can fit the existing 2.5" hard drive into.

Either externally or computer BUS powered units should work, and usually come with the appropriate needed USB cables.

And yes, other alternatives do exist.

Do i need to change the motherboard too?

Change the motherboard/logic board on which computer?...and for what reason? If we're just talking hard drive related stuff...the motherboard/logic board does not come into play.

I have no idea, and as Nick has mentioned, WHY you'd even want to.

It sounds to me like a bit unnecessary make work project.

Either way, depending on your thinking or plan, we'd still need a lot more details, again as Nick has mentioned.
