I would inclined to nominate the Firefox and Thunderbird pair - truly excellent, both, and free open source.

Also, what about poor old GIMP? A truly amazing bit of software - most people would willingly pay up to $100 or so for functionality like that... and they do! Think of Photoshop Elements!
