Can anyone guess when the 8 core mac pro will be out? Would I be better off waiting or just buy the dual core macpro right now?

What on earth do you need all that power for? Eight cores are of course better than four, but the difference really is quite marginal for today's computing applications.

Yes, what do you need it for?

and the diff is not marginal if you are doing 3d design work or high end audio / video work as all 8 cores will more likely be used with the properly coded applications.

I would wonder if you could just like that afford an 8-core if it ever comes out.

I am planning on upgrading the the 8 core system when it comes out. My G5 quad as fast as it is, sometimes is too slow for what I do.

thankfully those new cpu's will be a drop-in upgrade for the current mac pro's. Some day in 5 years when the mac pro is slow i can just get the upgraded 8 core cpu's and bam its like a whole new computer.

Years ago I remeber a conversation with a buddy of mine about the Western Digital 340 meg hard drive I was going to buy.....went something along the lines of " why would you ever need something that big? That huge. You will never fill it. Stick with your double spaced 40." All I can say is buy what you can afford. If you think you need it you probably will one day. Just remember cutting edge costs heaps.

I'd kill for an 8-core system when doing my 3D rendering. I've been debating picking up a scad of Mac Minis to create a render farm, but if there were 8-core Mac Pros available I could just get one of those instead.

Ditto, I need the power for my 3D animation. I was planning on buying a new Mac Pro next week, but with rumors of an 8 core mac, I'm thinking of waiting.

I wish I had a good excuse like the rest of you, but I simply have techno-lust; I would LOVE to have an 8 core machine. It suddenly makes my 2 core PowerMac seem a little underpowered! :)

However, restraint will get the better of me for some time I am sure. A new Mac Pro will not be cheap!

I wonder what the original computer enthusiasts yearned for when they bought their very first computer way back when Shep was a pup...or last Century - whichever comes first.

How about an Apple IIe expanded to 128K with 2 floppies? After that, an IBM AT with 1 MB RAM and a 24 MB drive. The drive died 1 day out of warranty and I replaced it with a "huge" 44 MB drive that cost almost $800.

My first after the Commodore days , had an 80 MB hard drive. Took a friend of mine to the store with me. He sold hard drives for Epson back then. Told me, you'll never fill that thing up.:bone:

Commodore 64, anyone?

Oh, and I'm waiting until I win the lottery, then going out and buying an 8-core Mac. All I need to do know is learn how to use Blender for my 3d work, and I'm all set...
