I received this cord with my MacBook Pro 15" (2015), along with the standard charging cord. I have been lugging it around for years. What is it's purpose?

You've probably been using the MacBook Pro power supply/power brick with the "stubby" 2-bladed electrical connector.

This "stubby" 2-bladed connector can be removed from the power supply/brick...then you insert the one end of the cord (in the attached image)...into the MacBook Pro power supply (where the stubby connector was).

This basically doubles the length of the power cord...in case you ever needed it to be longer.

Incredibly useful and expensive to replace/purchase I removed it from the power "brick" for my old MBP (swapped it for the "stubby" one) before trade in and now use it for my wife's MBP charger. 👍

My new MacBook Pro didn’t come with one. Hoping the older one will fit!

Yes, that extension will work for any Apple brick that has the removable prongs. I use it on my Late 2020 M1 MacBook Pro and it works great!!
