I'm a little confused. I read a little about "hype" over leopard being fully 64bit compatible as announced in wwdc07 keynote (or something like that, I'm not exactly a whiz).

My question is, would this make my MBP (15.4" 2.16ghz core 2 duo purchased a few months ago) faster? I guess my question here is, what is it that makes a computer 64bit? The software (operating system) that it uses, or is it only 64bit in terms of the hardware (like the processor), in which case leopard will not make my mbp faster?

Cheers for an explanation.

ALL CORE 2 DUOs are 64bit

all CORE DUO are 32bit.

is it faster? not now, not really. in the future, itll be more apparent

i am curious to see what leopard does to our machines. I was under the impression that TIGER had 64bit implementations, but that LEOPARD was in fact 64bit from the ground up.

should be good news

kgeier82 is correct. All the Core 2 Duo's are 64 Bit CPU's. All current Macs in the line except the Mini are 64 Bit.

64-Bit will be faster with true 64-Bit applications. That will take time.

am i right to assume leopard is a "true 64bit app?"

in comparison with Tiger, which is just an adjusted OS?

Leopard is 64-Bit from the ground up. Tiger had some 64-Bit but not top to bottom.

The interesting thing is that the CD chips are 64-bit capable, the functionality is just not enabled.

The nice thing about buying a C2D Mac is that you know that over time, it will only get faster.

Simple Reason why I opted for the G5 at the time, knowing it will not really lag too much over the Intel chips. I've used some Intel boxes, and all the superspeed Apple talks about isn't as true. They switched to Intel for Power Issues anyway, and I'm so happy with this G5 right now, I'm hugging it. Leopard, come!
