My wife has an outlook express mail account. The folders on the left include the usual "in box","junk", "drafts", "sent", and "deleted". Below those are folks that she no longer wants to communicate with, and wants to delete the folders. How does she do it? I am using OS 10.9.4

Outlook Express doesn't exist for the Mac. Did you migrate a mail box over to an email client on the Mac? Regardless, you should be able to delete a folder in whichever client you're using by right clicking it and selecting the delete option.

when I click on the folder I want to delete it turns grey not highlighter as you would expect, and there is no cut or delete option in the 'edit' column

Just so you know...we can't see this. You need to "host" your photo somewhere for it to embed in a post (paste the photo host link in the post). You just posted the "path" for this file on your computer.

I am pretty stupid on the multitude of Mac uses. I don't know how to host the photo.

Dear earley, to my great surprise I discovered that Outlook Express 5.0.6 is still available for Mac OS 8 to 9 but only for Power PC Macs. Is that what your wife is running or are we talking about a windows PC?
If so I think your answer is on this page and it may work for both platforms.

Thanks Rod,
She has a power pc with Mac OS 10.9.4. The bad news is that we tried to delete folders using the like that you posted and it didn't work.

I think we need some clarification here. A Mac with 10.9.4 can't be a PowerPC Mac since OS X 10.9 doesn't support the platform. That however is not the important point here. Outlook Express can't possibly run on that machine (it doesn't support it) so what mail client are you using? Apple Mail?

I finally found out how to do it. Hold down the command and control keys when you click on the folder. You will see a short list of options, one of which is delete.

Thanks for all of your help.

Well, I'm confused but luckily earley worked out how to do it, all credit for persistance.
Now I'd just like to satisfy my innate curiosity. PowerPC Mac + OS 10.9 + Outlook Express???

Again, that combination is impossible. OS X 10.9 is Intel only (thus, it cannot possibly run on a PowerPC Mac) and Outlook Express doesn't run in OS X at all. Are you running Outlook Express in Windows?

That combo is possible. See Rod Sprague's post above. He didn't believe it either.

Yes, OE may have run on a Mac at some point but that was limited to OS 8 and 9 (the last version of OS 9 was released nearly 13 years ago). If you're using OS X 10.9, you're not possibly running OS 9, a PowerPC or OE. It's technologically impossible.

That doesn't identify the processor. As vansmith said, OSX 19.9 will not run on a Power PC.

That's an Intel Mac, not a PowerPC Mac. Since you are running an Intel Mac with Mavericks (OS X 10.9), it is technologically impossible for you to be using Outlook Express.

Here's an easy way to solve this. Can you take a screenshot (Command-Shift-4, then press spacebar) of your email client?
