I signed up to Yosemite after advice given by Apple and now wish I hadn't. I have already had problems with updating Apps and also problems with iPhoto which now are hopefully sorted. However I don't know how to get my contacts back.

We need more info about your system. Which version of OS X were you using prior to upgrading to Yosemite? And did you check your Applications folder for "contacts.app"? It was formerly called "address book.app".
