Steve Jobs makes surprise noon appearance at Palo Alto Apple store for iPad opening day
http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_14814960
Jason Slack-Moehrle and his wife Annette claimed the honor of being first in line at Apple's Valley Fair retail store. The two showed up at 1 p.m. Friday. They camped out overnight in the cavernous structure — and they had company from the world's famous Apple fan, company co-founder Steve Wozniak, No. 4 in line, who arrived at 6 p.m.
In Palo Alto, shortly past noon, shoppers got more than a new shiny object - Apple CEO Steve Jobs showed up and his presence gave everyone a giddy brush with Silicon Valley high tech fame.
Not even the co-founder of Apple got special treatment. He still had to queue up like everyone else.

I highly doubt he "had" to get in line. I've seen many interviews and such with Steve Wozniak and he is a most humble, down to earth guy. I believe he "chose" to stand in line like everyone else. It's just his "way" of doing things. Super cool dude!

Absolutely! I think we can all agree that Wozniak could have the pick of the litter from whatever things Apple is hatching behind closed doors if he wanted to.

wish I knew this. I'm not to fond of standing in long lines or buying a 1G device but the story was cool. Maybe I can catch Jobs one day when I go down to my little brothers

Mee too, the guy is a billionaire. Your right he is a humble down to earth guy, who is filthy rich and you would never be able to tell if he wasn't famous.
I was reading somewhere that Woz still receives a pay check from Apple....

Dear Cookies:

It's "Woz" short for "Wozniak." And it's Kathy Griffin not griffen. And I think she's hilarious. :)

To everyone else: Woz was down there hanging out to get some extra iPads for friends (yes, he's that cool a guy). As seen in several videos, he already had an iPad (in fact, he had a 3G iPad -- which hasn't been released yet).

So yes, he still has "connections at Apple." :)

I found a pic of Steve at the Apple Store.

Seems steve went to the local dumpster to find his clothes. He look terrible. With the tear in his jeans etc. But seriously I think it done so he can slink away without being mobed by people. As in those clothes it's hard to know it's him unless you get a good look at his face.

I think he's pretty unmistakeable, espcially in his "Jobs uniform". The guy won't be seen outside of his blue jeans, black mock tutlreneck top, Newbalance shoes, and black socks!

It is ironic though that he's wearing torn jeans since those shoes cost more than $100 and he must buy a new pair pretty often for them to be looking brand new all the time. Must be a fashion thing to have the ripped jeans . . . but not if you're past your teens!

To all the iPad complainers out there, I only have this left to say: stop complaining that the square peg doesn't fit into the round hole and go find the round peg instead. Even my 2 year old niece can do that.

LOL! And I couldn't agree more!!
