I figured we would see 10.6.4/5 before any rumors of 10.7 would emerge.

OS4 is needed a lot more than 10.7 We've barely seen anyone really make use of 10.6 yet.

Well rumours were that SL was only a stop gap measure to combat OS 7 which explains why it never got a new name, simply re-branded Leopard. OS X.7 would really up the ante as it is whispered being compatible with multi-core Intel processors exclusively.

Correct me if I am wrong and it is possible I am. BUT didn't Snow Leopard do that already? That is after all what all the hullabaloo was about that there was no binaries for the Power PC processors. Which is also what upset me as well as many many other owners of PowerMac G5 platforms. But I do agree for the most part SL is simply an updated Leopard.

Yes however OS X.7 is hinted at being Quad Core and higher compatible.

No it didn't. SL is compatable with all intel macs. Even the single cored CD earliest intel imacs. I think Harry is talking about 10.7 only running on C2D/xeon or the i series of cpus.

But if my multi he means more then 2 then all the C2D users would be left in the cold.

Precisely. Part of the ongoing progress of Apple?

SL is already running 12 thread machines, which a dual i7 effectively is. Grand Central has everything necessary to optimize for multiple-core processors.

Almost nothing is known about 10.7, so anything here is pure conjecture. It will almost certainly be 64-bit only and will probably move very much towards GPU assisted operations, using a lot more OpenCL.

This entire thread is based on conjecture. The MacNN "article" is just plain speculation as well. So now we have speculation based on speculation.

I used to work for Apple. Unless they've completely abandoned their practices, they have a timeline for 10.7. If a project comes along that needs more people (say, getting iPhone OS 4 out the door on time), they will "second" people from one group to another (a lot like the military does). This generally does NOT cause any serious delays in the timeline.

Apple is currently in no rush / has no need for 10.7 to come out anytime soon. Indeed, the longer they wait the happier Leopard owners will be. I wouldn't expect 10.7 till at least two years from SL's release, so we're talking fall of 2011 and I'd guess that at the earliest, spring 2012 would be my guess.

I agree on one simple premise. They as of today are still selling C2D computers. And it'd be silly to have a system that can not run on computers currently being sold by Apple. So I think 10.7 will work on C2D. But have extra features for the 4+ core Macs.

The last G5 was discontinued August 2006. And SL came out August 09. So that is 3 years later. So judging by that timeframe A multi (4+) only version of OS X should come out 3 years after the last C2D computer is discontinued from the Apple lineup. Until then I think C2D will be supported in new OS releases.
